Bangalore, October 13: Sachin Tendulkar anchored India as the hosts battled to save the first test against Australia on Monday after being set 299 for victory, but fell just 15 runs short of Brian Lara's record of 11,953 runs immediately after tea.

Tendulkar fell on 49 after batting for over two and a half hours. He was also involved in two half-century stands after the hosts had lost two quick wickets.

Vangipurappu Laxman on 28 was at the crease with him, the pair adding 53 for the unbroken fourth wicket.

Mediumpacer Stuart Clark sent back dangerous Virender Sehwag for six and his new ball partner Brett Lee dismissed Rahul Dravid to reduce the hosts to 24 for two by the ninth over.
