At about 1.30pm local time on Thursday (7.30pm GMT), 39-year-old US Army psychiatrist Major Nidal Malik Hasan walked into one of the busiest parts of Fort Hood, a 50,000-strong military town in Texas, and opened fire with two pistols.
After a few long minutes 11 lay dead and at least people 32 were injured, including two civilians, in an attack described by President Barack Obama as a "horrific outburst of violence". Two more of those injured have since died, bringing the death toll as of 8am GMT to 13
