When was the last time that you saw a Malayalam blockbuster with a female lead landing some importance in the script?

But for a few, very few, exceptions, most of the movies revolve around the hero. In a very unusual development, Malayalee filmmakers have suddenly started a fascination for big stars from outside Kerala, to fill the vacancies of heroines in Mollywood.

It all started when top heroines in Malayalam cinema bid goodbye to cinema after wedlock. And suddenly, filmmakers felt a need to import big names from other languages of the South.

Today, heroines in Malayalam include Kaniha, Lakshmi Rai and Padmapriya - all outsiders. The trade in Kerala views the 'import' of girls more as an indication of the diminishing importance of heroines in films rather than import of better talent.

Glam girls like Shriya Saran, Sameera Reddy, Sharbhani Mukerji, Gowri Munjal, Charmi, Bhumika, Meenakshi, Namitha and others are a part of the bandwagon.
