A giant drilling machine has punched through the final metres of rock under the St Gotthard section of the Swiss Alps to complete the world's longest tunnel.

Construction of the 57 kilometre tunnel began in 1996.

When it opens in seven years' time, it will provide a new high-speed rail link between northern and southern Europe as well as help ease surface congestion and pollution on Swiss Alpine roads.
