Mumbai: Sachin Tendulkar led Mumbai Indians got the better of Chennai Super Kings and avenged the 2010 Indian Premier League final loss by beating the MS-Dhoni led side by 8 runs. The Mumbai Indians did nothing wrong as they fielded brilliantly and bowled sharply to take the steam out of Chennai's chase.
Chasing the target of 165, Chennai started of really well to score 31 runs in 3.4 overs before Munaf Patel produced a peach of a delivery to get rid of the dangerous Murali Vijay. But Mike Hussey continued to mix aggression with some deft placements and continued to steer the Super Kings to the target.
Meanwhile Raina came and went without troubling the score much. Even MS Dhoni couldn't do much and perished early. Mumbai continued to stifle Chennai's chase with some wonderful fielding and catching. Hussey, who it appeared was intent on taking his side home fell to a superb catch by Kieron Pollard.
Anirudh Srikanth too fell early while trying to deposit Harbhajan Singh into the stands.
Badrinath and Albie Morkel were then left with the task of chasing down the total. But Harbhajan cleaned up Morkel's furniture to leave the Super kings needing 29 of 16 deliveries. Harbhajan Singh bowling the pre-penultimate over accounted for R Ashwin and Joginder Sharma to effectively seal Chennai's chase.
The feisty Sardar ended with match figures of 5/18.
Earlier, MS Dhoni the Skipper of the Chennai Super Kings won the toss and called the Mumbai Indians to bat. His decision seemed to pay of instantly, as they got rid of R Sathish the third opening batsman to partner Sachin in this edition of the IPL. Sachin, who had hit two glorious boundaries, departed after trying to pull Doug Bollinger in to the fine leg but ended up giving a catch to Mike Hussey at the slips.Rohit Sharma, a new entrant to the Mumbai Indians team then joined forces with Ambati Rayudu and the two youngsters played some superb shots to steady the innings as well as keep the ante to ensure that Chennai couldn't manage to keep a leash on them.
Suraj Randiv deceived Rayudu in the flight and Dhoni dislodged the stumps to send the MI batsman packing after a well-made 27. He and Rohit Sharma had put up on 61 runs for the second wicket in less than eight overs.
Andrew Symonds, joined his former Deccan Chargers team-mate in the Mubai Indians camp and the duo hit some lovely blows to give the innings total a daunting look. Sharma, scored 87 from 48 balls and departed in the final over of the Mumbai Innings. Symonds, too played an impressive innings of 31 from 26 balls but looked a bit out of touch particularly against the impressive Doug Bollinger.
Mumbai are now on the top of the league table while Chennai stutter in the bottom five.
