Aravaan is a very challenging film for me because of the vast scale of production and the subject, says director Vasantha Balan.

Says the director, "The movie is based on Su. Venkatesan's 1,400 page novel 'Kaval Kottam'. I have used excerpts from the book for my screenplay. The movie is socially relevant and has historical significance.'

He along with art director Vijay Murugan, has created a village with 100 hutments around Arittapatti hills near Melur in Madurai to shoot Aravaan, which takes us back to the South India of the 18th century.
