Roseau, Dominica: A stubborn partnership of 65 runs between Shivnarine Chanderpaul who went on to score his 23rd Test century and Fidel Edwards, batting at number 10, enabled the West Indies to get out of jail and force a draw on day five of the third and final Test against India on Sunday.
However, it was Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men who went away with the spoils as India followed up their 3-2 victory in the one day international (ODI) series, with a 1-0 result in the Test series owing to their 63 run win at Kingston, Jamaica in the first match.
By doing so India created history by triumphing in both formats of the game for the very first time in the Caribbean.
Chasing a victory target of 180 in 49 overs, Edwards trapped Abhinav Mukund leg before wicket off the very first ball after the hosts were dismissed for 322 in their second innings.
India went into tea at 19/1, still requiring another 161 runs in the last session to wrap up the series 2-0.
Murali Vijay and Rahul Dravid kept the Windies bowlers at bay by adding 73 runs for the second wicket before Vijay fell to Ravi Rampaul for 45.
The Indian opener suffered the consequences for playing across the line to provide Devendra Bishoo with a comfortable catch.
Rampaul picked up his second wicket of the innings when he caught Suresh Raina off his own bowling. Raina who was promoted up the order to increase the scoring rate was out for eight.
With the score at 94/3 and 15 overs still left in the day, play was called off early by mutual consent which was an anti climatic end to an otherwise intriguing series.
Chanderpaul was declared as the man of the match while Ishant Sharma received the man of the series award for his 22 wickets.
Earlier, Harbhajan Singh took 4/75 and part time off spinner Raina grabbed the final two wickets as the hosts' second innings came to an end.
Chanderpaul, very much the hero of the day for the West Indies remained unbeaten on 116 which he scored off 343 deliveries.
Edwards' dogged resistance ended as was caught by Praveen Kumar off Raina's bowling for 30 off 106 balls.
Bishoo did not last long and was brilliantly caught in the slips by Dravid for one as Raina picked up his second wicket.
Chanderpaul scored his 23rd century in Tests to take the home side to 294/8 at lunch.
The veteran West Indian batsman was batting on 105 along with Edwards who was not on 16, as the West Indies ended the session with an overall lead of 151 runs with two second innings wickets still in the bag.
The hosts lost back to back wickets of skipper Darren Sammy and Rampaul in the first session of play as India looked to clean up the West Indian tail.
West Indies ended day four at 224/6 with a slender lead of 81 runs and four wickets in their kitty.
