I feel her pain. But Jovovich, in her fourth turn as Alice, the genetically enhanced, zombie-slaughtering heroine of the video game-inspired series, isn’t the only one looking a bit tired. The entire film suffers from a severe case of franchise fatigue, the hallmarks of which no amount of “big guns, beautiful women, [and] dogs with heads that explode,” as producer Jeremy Bolt so artfully boasts in the film’s official press notes, can possibly hide.<br /><br />This latest edition finds Alice stripped of her superpowers by her arch-nemesis, the blond Matrix reject Albert Wesker (a cringe-worthy Shawn Roberts), whose evil Umbrella Corporation created the virus that inadvertently turned most of the planet’s population into flesh-devouring zombies. Though she can no longer pull off fancy tricks like triggering spontaneous earthquakes, she’s still able to withstand powerful blasts without shielding and fire handguns the size of her head without any visible recoil. Both traits come in handy when she’s charged with leading a small, ethnically diverse group of human survivors through an army of undead, many of whom are armed with face-sucking tentacles in lieu of tongues, to a refugee camp located on a ship anchored off the coast of Los Angeles.<br /><br />For all of its recycled plot elements, predictable twists, and cliched dialogue, Resident Evil: Afterlife does feature one genuinely interesting new wrinkle (and no, it’s not the aforementioned dogs with heads that explode, though they are quite nice): It’s the first film of the franchise to be shot and edited entirely in 3D — the real, non-Clash of the Titans variety. Who knows, perhaps writer-director (and Jovovich hubby) Paul W.S. Anderson, returning to the helm after ceding directing duties on the prior two Resident Evil films, was simply too drained from the work of adding an additional dimension to all of the film’s flying limbs and bursts of blood to devote much creative energy to anything else. More likely, there was never any creative energy there in the first place.<br /><br />And still, Anderson sees fit to end the film with a transparent pitch for yet another sequel. Going the Distance begin, a barrage of colorful images envelope the screen, shaking and shifting to the sounds of contemporary pop-rock like a hipster-chick in a SoHo lounge. It sets the tone for a lighthearted but levelheaded romantic comedy that, like the music, is cool and crafty, but not completely above the clichés of the tried-and-true genre.<br /><br />Making her feature-film directorial debut, Oscar-nominated documentarian Nanette Burstein (On the Ropes) set out to make a film that, as she put it, “would feel as real as possible” – a tough job when taking on a studio comedy. But with a relatable premise, a punchy script and a cast that possesses a ton of personality, she succeeds at delivering a surprisingly fresh film that chronicles the pros and cons of a long-distance relationship between Justin Long’s Garrett and Drew Barrymore’s Erin.<br /><br />The first half hour is filled with the standard situational set-ups and character introductions that one expects from any film. We learn everything we need (and want) to know about Garrett and Erin: He’s a New York record label workhorse and she’s an aspiring journalist interning at a metropolitan newspaper. They frequent the same dive bar in downtown Manhattan and have a beer and barbeque-wings fueled fling which turns into a steady summer-long relationship. But all good things must come to an end, and as September approaches, she prepares to head back to Stanford for another semester, much to their mutual dismay. However, the feelings between them are sincere and they decide to give their spatially challenged relationship a shot.<br /><br />Real-life couple Long and Barrymore have a few touching moments throughout the film, mostly when the trials of their long-distance relationship take a toll, but they are a bore in comparison to the supporting cast. Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day bring frat-house etiquette and bro-mantic charm to the movie as Garrett’s best friends Box and Dan. Together, they are the living embodiment of testosterone and man-child — archetypes that have become all-too common in current rom-coms — but with legitimately funny performances, they really pay off. Christina Applegate is good for a load of laughs as Erin’s older sister Corinne, who is skeptical of Erin’s eagerness to engage in yet another risky romance; she steals the show with her unrelenting commentary.<br /><br />Going the Distance doesn’t break new ground within the genre or redefine cinematic romance, but it balances the sweet and sour moments of its story very well. Burstein minimizes the drama and keeps the comedy raw to maximize the entertainment value of the movie, which should please all who purchase a ticket. Somehow, the long distance dilemma hasn’t been tackled on film before and that makes the movie appear to be more original that it really is, but in a year where so few romantic comedies have brought the goods (The Back-Up Plan, Sex and the City 2), Going the Distance does just that.</div><br /><br />

It implies that the filmmakers behind it knew they were making a less-than-stellar movie, but it didn’t matter because they also knew that they had a built-in audience that wouldn’t care about all the problems that emerge along the way. Basically, “Review Proof” is code for “If you didn’t like it, it wasn’t made for you.”<br /><br />I, however, do not think that any film is “Review Proof.” It doesn’t matter if you’re making a feature adaptation of a fake trailer about a Mexican day laborer (Danny Trejo) out for head-chopping revenge against the man who framed him for murder (Jeff Fahey) and the man who killed his family (Steven Seagal) or a film about the liberation of a concentration camp. All films, even the silly ones, need to deliver on a fundamental set of criteria of dynamic characters involved in an interesting storyline that’s edited together coherently. If any of those elements are too far out of line, it cripples the entire thing.<br /><br />With Robert Rodriguez and Ethan Maniquis’ grindhouse throwback film Machete, there’s nothing wrong with the characters. Trejo was born to play the eponymous, all-that-is-man stoic hero, but the glue that holds the often messy film together are all of the supporting players, particularly Fahey, Jessica Alba, Don Johnson and Seagal, each of whom is having a ton of fun chewing into their extreme characters (no one can be just a federal agent or just a racist sheriff or just a drug lord; they have to be the most outlandish, these-colors-don’t-run version possible). The film’s story isn’t exactly original, but the “framed for an assassination” plot is a tried and true staple of the action genre for a reason, so it hardly holds the film back. That pinpoints the weakest link in this rather simple chain as the film’s editing.<br /><br />Unless one is curious as to how long a certain scene was, one should never be motivated to look at their watch during a movie. But during Machete I couldn’t help but find myself constantly reaching for it as though it were some kind of lifeline, wondering when the minute hand would discover the magic number that could rescue me from the increasingly grating affair. It’s disappointing that a film with as many decapitations and naked Lindsay Lohans as Machete can be boring, but sadly that is the case here. Much of the film slogs through a swamp of story arcs that were seen coming from miles away, completely forgetting that a movie of this nature needs to sustain its high (which essentially comes whenever Machete picks up, well, any object) without any dragging distractions to kill the buzz.<br /><br />It’s easy to admire Robert Rodriguez’s intended goal with Machete – to make the kind of offensive, politically incorrect film that played in grindhouse theaters in the ‘70s and ‘80s – but good intentions only go so far. In a strange way, Machete is almost too faithful to its ancestry. Sure, the violence is awe inspiring (at one point Machete repels down the side of a building using someone’s intestines, for crying out loud), and its adamant refusal to keep things comfy and PC is more than welcome, but its pacing gives the film too much slack rope with which to hang itself.</div><br /><br />

A veteran assassin-for-hire, Jack’s life bears none of the trappings that we’ve come to associate with men who kill people for a living. There are no exotic cars or high-tech gadgets, no boisterous comrades-in-arms, not even a precocious 12-year-old to help pass the time. Exiled to a small town in Italy while he waits for the heat to subside after a job in Sweden gone awry, he spends the bulk of his time alone, confined to his plain apartment, pausing between sets of pushups to peer anxiously out his window, where scores of invisible enemies no doubt lurk, waiting to strike.<br /><br />When he does venture out, it’s either to pay a visit to Father Benedetto (Paolo Bonacelli), a friendly and inquisitive local priest, or to enlist the services of Clara, (Violante Placido) an enchanting young prostitute. Jack makes for a reluctant social companion, talking little and smiling even less, and yet his two acquaintances seem inexorably drawn to him. Jack tries to keep them at a distance — he’s learned from experience that relationships can be hazardous to men in his line of work — but after years of allowing professional considerations to trump emotional ones, his resistance is no longer as stout as it once was. Having gotten a taste of love, he decides he rather likes it — so much, in fact, that he tells his boss (Johan Leysen) that he wants out of the death-delivery business for good as soon as he completes his latest assignment: the construction of a highly specialized firearm for a beautiful and mysterious would-be assassin (Thekla Reuten). But exiting such a profession is never a straightforward task, especially when there are angry Swedes vying for one’s scalp.<br /><br />Director Corbijn shuns much of the conventions of modern thrillers in The American, employing a style as spartan as his protagonist’s. Though the film contains several references — both overt and implied — to the spaghetti westerns of Sergio Leone, it might be said to have more in common with 1992′s Unforgiven, Clint Eastwood’s acclaimed deconstruction of the well-worn genre. Corbijn prefers long, static shots to the quick-cut, shaky-cam chaos of the Bourne films and their analogues, and his muted aesthetic makes even Italy’s scenic countryside seem a bit drab. There are no high-energy pop songs to be found on the soundtrack, only Herbert Gronemeyer’s haunting, piano-heavy score, which Corbijn employs sparingly. Instead, pervasive in The American is a kind of unnerving quiet that effectively underscores the film’s most potent scenes. How frightful a single gunshot can be when bracketed by near-complete silence.<br /><br />Clooney is characteristically superb as the paranoid, tormented Jack, a role that calls for a tremendous degree of subtlety, if not range. Corbijn tasks him, along with co-stars Bonacelli and Placido, to carry a determinedly minimalist film that boasts no fancy tricks up its sleeve, and they deliver admirably. Audiences who go to see The American expecting a conventional Hollywood spy thriller will no doubt be disappointed to find out they’ve stumbled into an art-house film — and an unrelentingly grim one at that — but those seeking relief from the inanity and bombast of the summer movie season will be pleasantly surprised.</div><br /><br />

After falling from his perch atop the comedy world with a trio of high-profile disappointments, Semi Pro, Land of the Lost, and Step Brothers, the venerable funnyman seemed destined to join the tragic ranks of fellow SNL alums Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy, comic geniuses who fell prey to their own spectacular success. But he makes a triumphant return to form in The Other Guys, a riotous action comedy from longtime Ferrell collaborator Adam McKay (Anchorman, Talladega Nights).<br /><br />Playing Allen Gamble, a straightlaced NYPD detective happily confined to his desk job as a forensic accountant, Ferrell dials down the goofball element that metastasized in recent years, instead exhibiting a kind of earnest cluelessness more reminiscent of his character in Elf. Safely in his element crunching numbers and combing paperwork for accounting irregularities, risk-averse Gamble is more than willing to concede the spotlight to the precinct’s glory-hound celebrity cops, Danson and Highsmith (Dwayne Johnson and Samuel Jackson), who’ve charmed the citizenry with their heroic indifference toward danger, private property, or common sense.<br /><br />Gamble’s good-natured obliviousness earns him the disdain of his embittered cubicle mate, Detective Terry Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg), who, unlike Gamble, didn’t come by his desk job by choice. In a city scarred by accidental police shootings and devoted to its beloved Yankees, Hoitz committed the ultimate sin, clipping an unarmed Derek Jeter in the leg during a moment of panicked confusion. (“You should have shot A-Rod!” one heckler shouts.) Removed from the street indefinitely by his boss, Captain Gene Mauch (a scene-stealing Michael Keaton), Hoitz is a snarling ball of impotent rage, most of which he directs at Gamble. (For those of you keeping score, yes, Keaton’s character is named after the former baseball manager.)<br /><br />This being a buddy comedy, Gamble’s and Hoitz’s fates are destined to intersect. Sure enough, their chance to seize the fire comes when the city’s all-star crime-stoppers, Danson and Highsmith, are abruptly taken out of commission in one of the most shockingly hilarious twists in recent movie history.<br /><br />Wahlberg and Ferrell may not make the best cops, but they’re an absolutely stellar comedic team. To their credit, McKay and Other Guys screenwriter Chris Henchy, know we won’t settle for just the tired bickering odd-couple scenario of buddy comedies past (see Cop Out), and they take care at several points to flip the script on the formula when Gamble and Hoitz hit the streets together, giving Wahlberg as many opportunities to flex his comedic muscles as Ferrell. It’s a bit of a gamble — the rapper-turned-actor isn’t exactly known for his range — but it pays off handsomely in the film.<br /><br />Wahlberg has shown a welcome willingness to make fun of himself in recent years with his cameos on SNL and in Date Night. His performance in The Other Guys is in many ways a straight-up parody of his abrasive, expletive-spewing character in The Departed, a role for which he earned an Oscar nomination. (This still boggles my mind — I hope Mark is sending weekly gift baskets to both Martin Scorsese and the Academy.) The Other Guys is easily his funniest work since The Happening.<br /><br />For his part, McKay throws in some solidly-crafted action sequences to complement the comedy, and even makes a stellar cameo as the leader of Dirty Mike and the Boys, a gang of homeless men who terrorize the Priuses of New York City with their all-night orgies, for which the interior of Toyota’s trendy hybrid are apparently ideal. But as a storyteller, he still struggles mightily with the third act (see Step Brothers, a film that all but fell off a cliff). The film loses some of its momentum in the second half, mainly because it must get down to the business of resolving its nebulous plot, which centers around the corrupt dealings of a hedge-fund charlatan (Steve Coogan) and some improperly filled-out scaffolding permits. But resolution issues notwithstanding, The Other Guys still marks a solid upgrade over Step Brothers in the McKay-Ferrell pantheon, and is arguably their best collaboration since Anchorman.</div><br /><br />

Piranha 3D : Really Kiddish Movie Review

<div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://bollymira.blogspot.com/" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="255" src="http://www.moviefilm.in/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/piranah-3D-hollywood-movie-2010.jpg" width="400"></a><br /></div> Movie Review Piranah 3D English Movie 2010 English Movie,English Movie Review,Movie Review<br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />Those who’ve watched MTV’s Spring Break and wished for its undulating crew of debauched partiers to be devoured wholesale, or who’ve witnessed Girls Gone Wild’s shameless exploitation of drunken college girls and longed for its smarmy founder, Joe Francis, to receive a grisly dose of karmic justice, or who’ve seen any of Eli Roth’s films and hoped for the “torture-porn” impresario to receive a dose of his own vile medicine, will find their catharsis in Piranha 3D. What they will not find is much in the way of a plot, quality acting, or anything remotely resembling restraint. But you weren’t really expecting that in a film about killer fish, were you?<br /><br />In Piranha 3D, director Alexandre Aja’s (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes remake) overriding concern is with his relentless onslaught of T&E — tits and entrails. He often groups them together in the same scene — presumably for efficiency’s sake — as when a busty topless parasailor (an IMDB search reveals her to be a porn star named Gianna Michaels) is bisected during a brief dip below the water’s surface, or when a similarly-endowed party girl is separated from her bikini top — and then much of her upper torso — by a stray cable from a tumbling platform. Indeed, Piranha DDD might be a more suitable title for the film, given Aja’s Russ Meyer-meets-Faces of Death sensibility.<br /><br />Given the ridiculous subject matter, Aja has little choice but to wholeheartedly embrace the camp of it all, and Piranha 3D is nothing less than the Avatar of B movie schlockfests. In addition to its array of grotesquely violent set pieces, the film boasts a gleefully wicked sense of humor, the primary vessel of which is Jerry O’Connell, who plays internet sleaze merchant Derrick Jones, an obvious stand-in for the aforementioned Francis. In search of fresh meat for his co-ed porn site, he combs the fictional Arizona resort town of Lake Victoria at the height of spring break for new prey. Unbeknownst to him, his prospective talent pool is about to be decimated by a swarm of piranhas recently freed from their undersea prison by a timely earthquake — this despite the heroic efforts of the town’s pair of hardy but laughably impotent sheriffs, (Elisabeth Shue and Ving Rhames).<br /><br />These razor-toothed piranhas may seem like mindless predators, but they are not without their share of admirable traits. Before beginning their feeding frenzy, for example, they’re considerate enough to allow the lake’s doomed revelers one last hedonistic hurrah, the highlight of which is an extended sequence in which Jones’ two most prized fillies, played by softcore titans Kelly Brook and Riley Steele, frolic naked underwater to the tune of “The Flower Duet” from Delibes’ Lakme. (“They’re like fish with boobies!” their director shouts ecstatically.) The fish clearly possess a taste for the ironic, and perhaps a bit of a feminist streak as well, as we witness when O’Connell’s character is literally emasculated during an ill-timed dive. (Fittingly, he gurgles “Wet t-shirt” as his final, blood-drenched words.) As his severed manhood sinks toward the bottom, a piranha arrives and snaps it up, but it doesn’t quite agree with the creature, and the penis is quickly burped up in disgust. Even the fish can’t stomach him, it seems.<br /><br />‘Piranha DDD’ is a more apt title for this breathless onslaught of T&E (the ‘E’ is for Entrails); the ‘Avatar’ of B movie schlockfests. </div><br /><br />

Nolan provides a rare fresh concept aboard rickety dream boat.The concept was very nice of many months before the film almost all the details kept under wraps.<br /><br />Leonardo DiCaprio does most of the heavy lifting, and the only unfortunate is that there are many similarities between his performance here and his performance earlier this year in Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island. Marion Cotillard has an equally difficult task, but is able to match DiCaprio's intensity while the more emotional moments reined.<br /><br />Initial is in the form of a film like Memento, and you may see at least twice to understand it fully. In Twilight, we were introduced to the central relationship of Bella (Kristen Stewart) and vampire Edward (Robert Pattinson), with little more established than that they were really into each other. In New Moon, Bella's friend Jacob (Taylor Lautner) came into the picture as both a possible suitor for Bella and as a werewolf, creating an especially tension-filled love triangle since, in the Twilight world, vampires and werewolves are natural enemies.<br /><br />While Twilight got by on the newness of the relationship, New Moon stalled out because nothing really happened. Could Eclipse finally kick the series into high gear? If it doesn't quite reach that goal, it's not for lack of trying. The action this time around picks up almost right where we left off, with Edward trying to convince Bella to marry him, something he requires before he will fulfill her request to be turned into a vampire herself. Meanwhile, Jacob is acting pouty since Bella appears to have all but chosen Edward over him.<br /><br />However, the fact that both of them love her comes in handy when a new group of vampires, led by the evil Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard, stepping in for the deposed Rachelle Lefevre), start attacking innocent citizens of Seattle in order to create an army. Their goal? To kill Bella in retaliation for Edward killing Victoria's mate, James, two movies ago. Victoria has been after Bella since Twilight, and this threat seems to be the most serious yet. Consequently, Edward's family and Jacob's family decide to put aside their differences for the common good, the protection of Bella.<br /><br />The feeling of forward momentum is ever-present in Eclipse, even if it's accomplished with a lot of smoke and mirrors. While the focus is still on tangled web of love between Bella, Edward, and Jacob, action or allusion to action rears its head often enough to keep the level of suspense up. There are times that director David Slade and writer Melissa Rosenberg seem to be teasing us, having characters talk about action that's happening off-screen. But the sequences they do show are the most intense scenes of the series, with multiple vampires getting their comeuppance in a unique, hard-to-describe manner (think ice breaking and you're close). Slade, who also directed the vampire-centric 30 Days of Night, was obviously a good choice to helm this outing.<br /><br />Once again, the story requires that all three main actors be perpetually moody. While the desire to see one of them -- any of them! -- smile only increases the more they scowl, enough humor is injected by other characters to make up for the trio's limited range of facial expressions. Bella's father Charlie (Billy Burke) pops up as comic relief now and again, with his position firmly on Team Jacob serving as the source of much of the laughter.<br /><br />Stewart, Pattinson, and Lautner are now obviously fully comfortable in their respective roles. While the repetitiveness of their actions can get a bit old, not once are any of them unbelievable. As the intensity of the story grows, they each rise to the level needed to match. Most of the supporting characters are now familiar enough that only a line or two is required to make them effective. Two newbies stick out for different negative reasons, however. It's unclear exactly why producers decided to replace Lefevre with Howard, and Howard's performance doesn't really justify her inclusion, as she struggles to hit the right notes for the villainous Victoria. There's also a forced showcase for a minor character named Bree (Jodelle Ferland, who appeared in support of Eclipse at Victory Park over the weekend). Given the level of impact she has on the film overall, it's odd how much they focus on her. Odd, that is, unless you know that Bree was given her own spin-off novella by author Stephanie Meyer. Can you say "synergy?"<br /><br />This is clearly the best film in the series so far, mostly because the story actually feels like it's going somewhere. Taken on its own, Eclipse provides plenty of romantic intrigue and related excitement to keep even casual fans (like myself) interested and ready for more. With two more films to go (the last book, Breaking Dawn, has been broken into two films a la Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows), things only seem to be getting better.<br /><br /></p>

So a world called nothing less than Pandora has everything he and his visualisers could drum up in a creative and wishful frenzy: animals that are a cross between dinosaurs, dragons, horses and dogs (in varying degrees); flowers that fold in on themselves or burst out as floating blossoms; plants that glow in the dark, especially just under your feet in the dense forest, or go dim when somebody dies; a tree that lets you hear your ancestors and sheds lighted seeds which are “pure spirits”; astonishing “floating mountains” in a “flux vortex”; and finally humanoids in blue skin, with shiny, carefully positioned, proportioned spots, and especially plaits with split ends which perform functions as diverse as letting you steer horses, guiding your own flight bird and connecting with the past.<br /><br />That’s a lot of creativity and a lot of frenzy. Expectations trail Avatar not only because it is one of the costliest movies ever made but also because it is Cameron’s first feature film in a decade since Titanic. Forty per cent live action and 60 per cent “photo-realistic” CGI come at a price — in this case, you come away feeling overawed but underwhelmed.<br /><br />That you are watching a magnificent achievement in special effects, going where no man has literally gone, is evident quite early on. That the story will progress down a well-trodden path is as obvious.<br /><br />Let’s see. A disabled, disillusioned Marine, Jake Sully (Worthington), lands up at Pandora in the year 2154 for a unique experiment that entails him going into a machine and coming out looking like a strapping, native Na’vi. A DNA mix of the real Jake and the Na’vi accomplishes this “avatar”.<br /><br />On the one side are the scientists led by Dr Grace Augustine (Weaver) who believe Project Pandora is humanitarian, and on the other are the corporate greedy types led by Parker (Ribisi) and the trigger-happy types led by Colonel Quaritch who are unapologetic that it all comes down to a mineral worth $20 million a kilo that the Na’vi are sitting on.<br /><br />Jake goes in his avatar into Pandora, and within the first few hours, manages to be attacked and saved by the beautiful daughter of the chief, Neytiri (Saldana). In another hour, being a Marine and all, he manages to convince the Na’vi of his warrior capabilities, and they take him on to be trained as one of their own.<br /><br />What follows is a lot of “getting to know the forest”, its “spirits”, and its “network of connected energy”. That Jake and Neytiri discover other connections shouldn’t come as a surprise. Or what would follow when the cruel corporates decide to force their plans and the heroic Marine decides to stand in their way.<br /><br />One doesn’t need three hours and $500 million (the budget, by some accounts) to figure out this one. Especially if one comes out clueless about how man plus machine equals avatar, and man minus machine means a sleeping avatar just waiting to spring up till the next pop into the magical “transporter”.<br /></div><span style="font-size:78%;">shalini.langer@expressindia.com</span>
