Rama Raavanan 2010 Malayalam Movie Review

It’s about the impact that ‘a pretty girl from the opposite front’ makes in the mind of a terrorist, who happens to be a poet as well.Well, such stories have been handled a zillion times in several Hindi films in the past, but the director of Rama Ravanan has tried to make it a bit more intense, especially by adding an ideological angle to this romantic story. But there lies the problem with the film as well. The focus gets diluted and the film gets into an extremely predictable track all on a sudden.<br /> <br />Thiruchelvam (Suresh Gopi) is a fugitive on the run finding refuge in a deserted bungalow. He is there on a mission before the cops nab him. He has to find Manomi (Mithra Kurian), a Sinhalese girl, who fell in love with him sometime back. She was aware that he belonged to an outfit which was engaged in war with the Sinhalese. Also, Thiruchelvam has to meet his mother, whom he hasn’t seen for years.<br /> <br />The romance between Thiruchelvam and Manomi is shown as a flashback. But you actually wonder how the two fell desperately in love considering the cold vibes between the actors. Suresh Gopi has done an okay job but Mithra Kurian looks like wooden, in most scenes.<br /> <br />Nedumudi Venu plays a character named Annadurai who treats the Sri Lankan girl like his own daughter and he has performed in a really good manner. Biju Menon, as the cop in search of Thiruchelvam has to look stylish and tough, which he does quite easily.<br /> <br />In all fairness, there is a genuine storyline here but the writer-director has mostly failed to narrate it in a convincing way. The visuals are okay and the music is fine.<br /> <br />Rama Ravanan is perhaps more of a confused film. The makers of the film seem to have been not quite sure about the genre or its target audience. It’s a pity as the film fails to impress in spite of having a decent concept. The film discusses the problems ordinary people faces at government offices - corruption.<br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />Writing -Sreenivasan is one-man army who continues winning streak even after most of his peers stopped writing. Malayalees have given him an eminent position that, this man stars brighter than the superstars. The last film he wrote was Katha Parayumbol which was a success beyond borders. The problem when he comes into a project is that, even directors get overshadowed. Many film viewers consider Sreenivasan as the filmmaker even in films he acts.<br /><br />The film starts with showing the life of curropt Asst. Town Planning officer played by Sreenivasan. The smooth run of the story falls into gutter when ever the irrelevant family plot raises its head. Film doesn't have boring scenes except those. Sameera Reddy with her stony expressions haven't got anything to do in this film. The director has failed in casting her for the role. Like the wife, she portrays in film, Lal and Sameera doesn't have any similarity and also act without any screen chemistry. Another actress would have done more justice to the role. The child artist should have been given more instructions to act convincingly.<br /><br />In some scenes the filmmaker has tried to be slapstick, but failed. The fight scene is another pointless addition. Cinematography by Manoj Pillai is ok, though we could see the reflections of crew in more than one scene.<br /><br />Undoubtedly, the scenes with Lal and Sreeni acting together are hilarious and engaging. Sreenivasan looks healthier and is not mocking any of his ready-made expressions. Their penultimate film Ividam Swargamanu and this film has something in common, the fight against bureaucracy.<br /><br />Suraj Venjarammood is good in, what he is best at. Indrans who is in a couple of scenes give us a few chuckles. Devayani as the wife of Sreenivasan has done good job. Nedumudi does a character role. This two and half hour film goes from one turn to the next at a splendid pace. The film produced by Manian Pillai Raju will make pots of money.<br /><br />Thanseer M.A<br />3.25 / 5</div>

But whether the film has what you call ‘substance’ is worth discussing. And the film doesn’t appeal as much as did the earlier Mohanlal-Sreenivasan films. Yet, ‘Oru Naal Varum’ is no trash.</p><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><p style="text-align: justify;">Gopi Krishnan (Sreenivasan) is an Assistant Town planning officer and is steeped in corruption. He never feels qualms of any kind in receiving bribes; in fact he won’t ever do his work without being bribed. But he manages to make his naïve and loyal wife Rajalakshmi (Devayani) believe that he is not corrupt at all. (Well, does that seem a bit over-exaggerated?). Gopi Krishnan gets apt assistance from his driver Girijan (Suraaj Venjaramoodu), who haggles with people and facilitates the giving and taking of bribes and all. Enter Sukumaran Kulapully (Mohanlal), who has to get Gopi Krishnan’s sanction for beginning the construction of his house. Gopi has an earlier grudge against Sukumaran and moreover he won’t ever budge without being bribed. Sukumaran has his own share of problems, personal ones. His estranged wife Meera (Sameera Reddy) wants him to hand over their daughter to her, whom she had left in the custody of Sukumaran as she had no job or money to take care of the child. Well, it’s into all this that another aspect of the same story is woven in. Sukumaran has an altogether different identity too. And there begins a new track.</p><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><p style="text-align: justify;">Well, what is the film all about? Is it about the corrupt government official and what all happens to him and his family? Or is it about Sukumaran and his problems? Well, it’s mainly about the corrupt Gopi Krishnan and corruption and related issues. The other things simply prop it all up. There are of course places where it seems to go all wrong. There are times where things seem to be blown out of proportion. There are bits of fantasy it seems, in contrast to the rather unpleasant realities that the film attempts to discuss. There are minuses and minuses if you set out to point out. But ‘Oru Naal Varum’ has got its share of pluses too. The film’s major highlight is that it’s a good intentioned one, one that has a message to convey. And that’s done in a commendable way too. There are things that would appeal to you. In total, there is no point in saying that the film is not at all worth watching; on the contrary I’d like to say that go, watch the film, at least for goodness’ sake.</p><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Performances</strong></p><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><p style="text-align: justify;">There is no denying the fact that Mohanlal has done justice to his role and that Sreenivasan has played his role in his characteristic style, with ease. All the same, it has to be noted that the kind of chemistry that worked out with the Mohanlal-Sreenivasan combo earlier doesn’t seem to work out now. And Sreenivasan seems to be still caught up in his mannerisms and a stereotyped kind of acting style and dialogue delivery, which of course we still love to watch. Sameera Reddy is good as Meera, but she has not got much to do, performance-wise. She does justice to whatever she gets to do in the film. Devayani is her usual self while Suraaj Venjaramoodu performs in his typical style and elicits quite a laugh. Nedumudi Venu delivers a real good performance, as the retired hawildar who refuses to bribe Gopi Krishnan and is hence forced to undergo all kinds of hardships.</p><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Technical aspects</strong></p><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><p style="text-align: justify;">Technical aspects are all in sync with the mood of the film.</p><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Music</strong></p><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><p style="text-align: justify;">M.G.Sreekumar has done a rather good work of the music direction. The songs have come off much better than what he had done earlier in ‘Thandavam’ and ‘Chathurangam’.</p><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><p style="text-align: justify;">Script</p><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><p style="text-align: justify;">Sreenivasan has done a fairly good work of the script, with his usual kind of wit and humour being there all through. He has dealt some of the sequences with a stroke of satire, which makes it good. But on the whole, it has to be said that the script is nowhere near the best of what has been penned by Sreenivasan. There are some scenes that even seem illogical and improbable. Sreenivasan definitely could have delivered a much better script.</p><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Direction</strong></p><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><p style="text-align: justify;">There may not be too many negatives to be mentioned against T.K.Rajeev Kumar and his direction, but there aren’t too many positives either. It’s good, much better than some of the director’s earlier films, but not as good as his ‘Chanakyan’ or ‘Pavithram’. Though Dileep went on to become one of the top stars, Thaha’s career took a dip after that. The Thaha-directed films that came after that- ‘Thekkekara Super Fast’, ‘Kerala House Udan Vilppanaykku’, ‘Hailessa’- were utter flops. Here comes another movie, ‘Kappal Muthalali’, which no doubt would prove an addition to this list.</p> <p>‘Kappal Muthalali’ tells the story of a young guy named Bhoominathan (Ramesh Pisharody), who is working in the passport office. His family comprises of his aged mother, his elder sister and brother in law and his younger sister. Bhoominathan is the sole bread-winner. But things get hard for him as a result of the liabilities incurred by his late father and also because as per his father’s will, he gives half his salary every month to a guy named Parasuraman (Bheeman Reghu), who pops up at the office every month. Finding it difficult to make both ends meet, Bhoominathan quits his job and with the money that he gets for compensation under the VRS scheme, he buys a plot of land and with the help of his friend and building supervisor Thulaseedharan (Jagadeesh) sets out to build up a tourist resort there, all this without the knowledge of his family members or even Radhika (Sarayu), his lover and fiancée. As the work progresses, something strange happens. A centuries-old sail ship is unearthed during the digging of the site. Archaeology guys come up and take over and then things start falling apart for young Bhoominathan, whose land is no longer his and who has to fight it all alone, of course with Thulaseedharan by his side. It’s from here that things take off.</p> <p style="color: rgb(255, 255, 0);"><strong>Performances</strong></p> <p>As for Ramesh Pisharody, who plays Bhoominathan, he is yet to learn the nuances of acting. Ramesh, who took to cinema from the small screen, has got to realize that acting is very much different from what these guys do in the name of anchoring on television. Sarayu is OK. Mukesh, Jagadeesh and Jagathy Sreekumar are good. Bheeman Reghu and Salim Kumar are their usual selves. The others don’t have much to do in the whole of the proceedings.</p> <p style="color: rgb(255, 255, 0);"><strong>Technical aspects</strong></p> <p>Nothing much to say about the technical features. It’s all average.</p> <p style="color: rgb(255, 255, 0);"><strong>Music</strong></p> <p>Background score by Mohan Sithara is in keeping with the mood and the tempo of the film. The songs however are unimpressive.</p> <p style="color: rgb(255, 255, 0);"><strong>Script</strong></p> <p>A plot that could have made for a wholesome entertainer has gone all waste, due to inept scripting. The scenes are all ill conceived and the dialogues too unimpressive. A big ‘boo’ for the script.</p> <p style="color: rgb(255, 255, 0);"><strong>Direction</strong></p> <p>Thaha’s mind, as a director, seems to be stuck in the late 1980’s, for his films seem to be refusing to come of age.
